In an era where speed, technology, and prefab construction often take center stage, many people ask: Is masonry a dying trade? The answer is no — but like every skilled craft, it’s evolving.Whether you're considering masonry repairs, planning a new masonry build, or looking to add decorative masonry features to your home or business, this age-old trade is more relevant than ever. The Demand Is Still StrongAcross cities and towns worldwide, the need for skilled masons continues — especially in high-quality construction. From restoring historical buildings to laying the foundation for modern developments, masonry remains a core part of the construction industry. As older craftsmen retire, there’s a noticeable shortage of skilled masons. This makes qualified professionals even more valuable for projects that require precision, durability, and timeless style — especially for brickwork, stone facades, and custom features.Modern Technology Is Changing the Game — Not Replacing ItIt's true: new construction methods like modular building and prefabrication are reshaping the industry. Why Brick Repointing MattersWindsor and Essex County homes take a beating from our Southern Ontario climate. From humid summers to freeze-thaw winters, the brickwork on your home endures a lot. Over time, the mortar holding your bricks together starts to deteriorate — and when that happens, repointing isn’t optional; it’s essential. At McNamara Masonry, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners in LaSalle, Tecumseh, Amherstburg, and Windsor restore the integrity and beauty of their brickwork. If you’re wondering whether it’s time to repoint, this guide is for you.⸻What Is Repointing?Repointing is the process of removing old, crumbling mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. While the bricks themselves can last over a century, the mortar typically only lasts 25–30 years — even less in areas with extreme freeze-thaw cycles like Kingsville or Lakeshore.Without timely repointing, your walls or chimney can become vulnerable to:• Water damage
• Structural instability
• Increased energy costs
• Interior wall damage and mold growth⸻7 Signs You Need RepointingHere’s what homeowners across Windsor-Essex should watch for:1. Cracked or missing mortar joints
2. Water leaks around interior walls
3. Efflorescence (white powdery salt on bricks)
4. Bulging or bowing brick walls
5. Spalling bricks (faces flaking or falling off)
6. Loose or shifting bricks
7. Moss or vegetation between bricks
Live in Walkerville, Forest Glade, or East Riverside? These areas often have older brick homes where signs of wear show faster due to age and exposure.⸻Why Windsor-Essex Weather Makes It WorseOur region is particularly tough on masonry. Here’s why:• Freeze-thaw cycles: When water seeps into cracked mortar and freezes, it expands, forcing the bricks apart.
• Humidity & precipitation: In Leamington and coastal towns like Colchester, high moisture levels speed up mortar decay.
• Urban salt exposure: In central Windsor or near roadways in Tecumseh, salt from winter roads can leach into brick and mortar, causing damage.⸻What Happens If You Delay Repointing?Delaying repointing can lead to:• Major structural repairs (much more expensive!)
• Water damage inside walls
• Collapse of chimney stacks or retaining walls
• Decreased property value
One Amherstburg homeowner waited too long — and what started as minor joint repairs ended in a full chimney rebuild. Don’t let that be you.⸻How Repointing Works: Step-by-StepHere’s how we approach a typical repointing job at McNamara Masonry:1. Inspection: We assess the damage and test mortar hardness.
2. Mortar Removal: Using specialized tools, we grind out the decayed joints.
3. Mix Matching: We match your original mortar in colour, texture, and composition.
4. Application: Fresh mortar is pressed into joints and tooled for strength and appearance.
5. Curing & Cleanup: Mortar is misted for proper curing, and your walls are cleaned. We’ve done this on homes from South Windsor to Belle River — and every job is tailored to the structure’s age and material.⸻When’s the Best Time to Repoint? The best months for repointing in Windsor-Essex are April through October — before the deep freeze sets in.Fall is a great time because:• Mortar cures well in mild temperatures
• You’ll prevent winter water infiltration
• It protects your home for the next freeze-thaw cycle⸻Why Choose McNamara Masonry?✅ Over 12 years of experience in Windsor-Essex County
✅ Experts in heritage brick restoration and modern homes
✅ Trusted by homeowners in Tecumseh, LaSalle, Amherstburg, Kingsville and beyond“The team at McNamara did an incredible job repointing our 100-year-old Walkerville home. We get compliments weekly!”

25–30 years with proper care — longer with high-quality mortar. Can you repoint in winter?
Not ideal. Mortar won’t cure properly in freezing temperatures.Do you match old bricks and mortar colours?
Yes — we specialize in heritage and colour-matching restoration.
David McNamara - 10.11.25

Mindee had a problem that just wouldn’t quit. Her front entryway featured a decorative stucco pillar that, over time, had become more than just an eyesore—it had turned into a birdhouse for a few overly ambitious woodpeckers. They’d hollowed out the foam core and made themselves right at home, pecking away day after day. Every morning she’d hear that familiar tap-tap-tap, a reminder of a problem that patching just couldn’t fix. When I arrived, it was clear that the pillar had reached the end of its life. The stucco was brittle, the foam was compromised, and the birds had done more renovation than repair could undo. So, I tore it all down—stucco, foam, and all—and hauled away the debris, taking with it every trace of her frustration and worry. In its place, I built something timeless. I designed and constructed a new stone pillar inspired by Greco-Roman architecture—a structure with both presence and personality. Using hand-laid corbelling stones and rock-faced white limestone sills, I gave her entryway a total facelift that turned a fragile facade into a fortress of natural beauty. Now, instead of hearing woodpeckers, Mindee hears compliments. The new pillar doesn’t just support her porch—it elevates her home. And as for the birds? Let’s just say they’ll have to find a new address.A Masonry Transformation That LastsAt McNamara Masonry, I take pride in turning headaches into highlights. Whether it’s a crumbling stucco column, a worn chimney, or a porch that needs a second life, I build structures that stand the test of time—and taste.📞 If your home needs expert masonry restoration or stonework in the Windsor–Essex area, call me, David McNamara, at (226)-260-1714 or visit www.mcnamaramasonry.com#BuildSomethingBeautiful #WindsorProud #lasalle
